전문 도서관 뺨치는 뉴욕 공공 도서관

뉴욕 performing Art 도서관

미국에 살면서 가장 많이 이용한 공공 시설은 자에게는 공공 도서관인것 같습니다. 처음 미국에 와서는 영어를 배우러 다녔고 조금후에는 저의 아이들 그림책 빌리러 자주 찾았습니다. 또 심심할때는 잡지 보러도 들어갔고 중요한 자료를 찾기도 했습니다. 큰 허리케인이 불어 동네 전체에 전기가 나갔을때는 그곳에 아이폰 충전하러 가기도 했습니다. 

저는 자주 이사를 해서 이용했던 동네 도서관이 상당히 많습니다. 그런데 그 도서관들 중에서 제가 생각하기에는 세계적인 도시답게 뉴욕의 도서관은 비교할수 없을 정도로 양과 질에서 으뜸이라고 볼 수 있습니다. 우선 공공 도서관임에도 특수분야를 취급하는 전문 도서관들이 많습니다. 

링컨센터에 있는 The Performing Arts 도서관은 음악과 연극,영화, 댄스에 관한 자로로 가득차 있습니다. 저의 전공 분야인 음악인 경우에 모든 악보와 음반, 관련 서적이 잘 정리되어 보관되어 있어 구입할 필요가 별로 없습니다. 

뉴욕 도서관의 본점이라고 할수 있는 42 스트릿 도서관은 전문가들을 위해 모든 데이타 베이스, 희귀 도서, 예술 작품, 역사적 자료등이 갖추어져 있어 학자들의 발길이 끊이지 않습니다. 와이프가 렘브란트 작품을 연구하러 갈때 같이 간일이 있었는데 와이프가 렘브란트의 진짜 스케치를 받아볼 때 와이프 손이 엄청 떨렸습니다. 

그런가 하면 그곳에 멀지 않은 40 스트릿에 있는 비지니스 도서관은 회사를 경영하는 사람, 창업하는 사람들을 위한 자료를 준비하고 상담을 합니다. 저도 이곳에서 여러번 교육을 받았습니다. 푸드 트럭를 준비하는 사람들을 여럿 보았습니다. 

그외에도 문화를 주로 다루는 도서관, 언어만 취급하는 전문 도서관이 있습니다. 뉴욕에 거주하는 사람과 거주하지 않더라도 뉴욕에서 일하는 사람은 이 도서관들을 무료로 이용할수 있습니다. 이용 시간도 밤까지 상당히 길어 직장인들도 도서관 이용을 잘 할수 있습니다. 

While living in the United States, the most used public facility seems to be a public library. When I first came to the United States, I went to learn English, and after a while, I often visited to borrow my children's picture books. Also, when I was bored, I looked at magazines and for essential data. When there was a big hurricane, and the electricity went out in the whole neighborhood, I went there to charge my iPhone. 

I used quite a few local libraries because I moved often. But among those libraries, in my opinion, as a world-class city, New York's libraries are incomparably the best in terms of quantity and quality. First of all, there are many specialized libraries dealing with particular fields, even though they are public libraries. 

The Performing Arts Library at Lincoln Center contains books about music, theater, film, and dance. In the case of music, which is my major field, all sheet music, records, and related books are well organized, and there is no need to purchase them. 

The 42nd Street Library, the headquarters of the New York Library, is always visited by scholars, with all databases, rare books, artworks, and historical materials for professionals. There was a time when my wife went to study Rembrandt's work, and when my wife received an actual sketch of Rembrandt, my wife's hands trembled. 

On the other hand, the business library on 40th Street, not far from there, prepares materials and consults for people who run companies and start-ups. I have also been trained several times here. I saw several people preparing food trucks. 

In addition, there are libraries that deal mainly with culture and those that specialize only in languages. New York residents and those who work in New York, even if they do not live, can use these libraries free of charge. The hours of use are also quite long until night, so even regular workers can use the library well.
